James Cumby was born into the funeral business. He worked part-time with his parents while in high school and after graduation, he attended the Cincinnati School of Mortuary Science. James later went on to receive his degree in Business Administration from the University of Alabama. He has been a licensed funeral service professional since 1962. On May 12, 2011, James celebrated 50 years of working with Cumby Family Funeral Service.

Andrew Cumby received his Funeral Service Degree in 2000, from Fayetteville Technical Community College. After graduating, he moved back to High Point, and joined Cumby Family Funeral Service on a full time basis. Andrew spent a year in Atlanta, Georgia working for Wages & Sons Funeral Service, where he learned about crematory operations and crematory management. He is a licensed funeral director, embalmer, and crematory operator.

Cy Books also grew up in the funeral business. He received his license in 1985 and his degree from Gupton-Jones College of Mortuary Science in Atlanta. Prior to joining Cumby Family Funeral Service, Cy lived in the Charlotte area, where he managed a funeral home.

Deana Kelly

Deana joined Cumby Family Funeral Service in May 2015, when she relocated to the area from Florida, and brings with her over 18 years of experience in the funeral industry, having served as a funeral director in Georgia, Virginia, Arkansas, Louisiana and Florida. She is a graduate of the College of Charleston and Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service. Deana is a member of the Furnitureland Rotary Club in High Point, The Junior League of High Point, The Triad Women's Forum, The Guild of Family Service of High Point and is a graduate of the Leadership High Point Class of 2016. She and her husband, Mike, reside in the Emerywood neighborhood of High Point.

Bob Whetstone

Bob joined our staff in September 2014 and brings with him more than 35 years of experience in the funeral industry. He attended Anderson College in Anderson, IN and graduated from Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service in Atlanta, GA.  He is a licensed funeral director, embalmer, and crematory operator, and serves as our Crematory Manager.  Bob is very active in Shady Grove Wesleyan Church, where he attends.  He is also an active member and former president of the Kernersville Civitan Club.

Tommy Southern

Tommy joined Cumby Family Funeral Service in December 2015.  He received his diploma (honors) in funeral service in 1990 from Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service, Atlanta, GA, and in 1995 received his Bachelor of Arts degree (Summa Cum Laude) in Religion from Southern Wesleyan University, Central, SC.  He received his North Carolina Funeral Service license in October 1990 and became a certified crematory operator in March 2016.  He has previously served funeral homes in Greensboro and Statesville.  Tommy attends Hayworth Wesleyan Church and his hobbies include stamp collecting, reading and visiting presidential gravesites.  He has three children – Caleb (22), Abbey (16) and Josiah (13), and currently lives in Archdale with his dachshund, Isabel.

Jonathan received his Funeral Service Education degree in 1994 and his Funeral Service License in 1995.  He had worked with Cumby Family Funeral Service from 1997 until 2011, and returned in 2014.  He and his wife, Krista, have four children, Wesley, Grace, Seth and Faith.

Kenneth has been a licensed funeral director since February of 2006.  Formerly of Catawba County, he now resides in High Point, and joined the team at Cumby in July 2017.  Kenneth has three children: two daughters and a son, along with one grandson and a granddaughter due in November 2017.

Kristina Sloan

Kristina joined our staff in July 2017.  She is a 2005 graduate of T.W. Andrews High School in High Point, and a 2012 graduate of Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service in Atlanta, GA.  Kristina is a licensed funeral director, embalmer and crematory operator, and is a member of the Theta Zeta Chapter of Tau Beta Sigma National Honorary Band Sorority.  She is the oldest daughter of Kimberly Sloan, and of her siblings, Joseph, Patrice and Menai.  ~ Philippians 4:13

David Emery

Aftercare Director

Rev. David Emery is our Aftercare Director, and part of his ministry is to direct the services that we provide for our families following the funeral. He comes to us with a wealth of experience in pastoral ministry, having served congregations in Michigan, Wisconsin, and North Carolina during his 38 years of pastoral ministry. Having lived in the High Point area for 30 years, he has walked through the "valley of death" with hundreds of local families.

A native of Randolph County, Lisa resides in Sophia with her husband, Keith.  They have one daughter, Kelly and husband, Adam; five grandchildren, Landon, Colby Grace, Lane, Logan and Maxton; and a beloved golden retriever, Sophie.  Lisa attends Grace Church in High Point.  She has been employed with Cumby Family Funeral Service since 1990 and is in charge of the administrative operations at our Archdale office.

Therapy Dog

Born in Mississippi, Benny, an English Cream Golden Retriever, joined the Cumby team in September 2016, at the age of three months old. He received his therapy dog certification in March 2017.  In addition to bringing comfort to grieving families and friends that have lost a loved one,  Benny enjoys visiting many organizations and facilities in our community to share some joy.

November 2, 1943 - April 18, 2016

Barney was an active member of the Archdale community most of his life, mostly working in sales. He was a greeter at our Archdale facility and a funeral director's assistant. He was a member of Colonial Baptist Church in Trinity. Barney loved his Lord, his family and helping people.

He was a loving husband, father, brother and uncle and will be deeply missed.
