Rev. Elliot B. Stewart, D.Min., age 87,  passed from this life to his eternal reward with the Lord on July 19, 2011.

During his 13 years of retirement at Piedmont Crossing Center,  100 Hedrick Drive, Thomasville, NC,  he continued his life-long calling to preach the good news and minister to the needs of others.  He continued until he suffered a leukemia-induced stroke on July 14, 2011.  

In the preceding fifty years he served as pastor to seven churches:  Green Street in High Point NC (1985-1998), Trinity Baptist in Trinity NC (1963-1984), First Baptist in Gastonia NC (1960-1963), Riley's Creek Baptist in Rocky Point NC (1955-1960), Baptist Churches in Corinth and Teachy NC (1951-1955), and New Brandenburg Baptist Church in KY (1948-1951).  Dr. Stewart served as an religion instructor at Davidson County Community College, as a volunteer chaplain at High Point Hospital, as a Hospice team member, and as a leader of associations of churches and ministers during 1973-2003.  

He was born March 6, 1924, in Fairfield NC,  was born again August 1933, and was ordained as a minister in 1947.   His parents, Rev. Elliot R. Stewart and Ms. Leafy May Brown Stewart, dedicated their lives to Baptist church congregations in eastern North Carolina.  

Dr. Stewart earned degrees from Fairfield High School (1940), Campbell College (1943), Wake Forest College (B.A. and Th.M. in 1951),  UNC-Greensboro (M.A. 1971),  and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (D.Min. 1976).
In 1955 Dr. Stewart received a Citizen's Citation Award from Gardner-Webb College for outstanding achievement and service in the field of Christian Ministry.  He received a Citizen of the Year Award from the Archdale Lion's Club in 1969, and an Extra Mile Award from the Archdale Chamber of Commerce in 1998.

As a volunteer for service (1943-1946) in the Army Infantry during World War II, Dr. Stewart served in European Theaters with the 100th Division and was awarded two purple hearts, a distinguised service award, a bronze star for bravery.

In 1947 he married the love of his life, Pauline "Polly" Wilder Stewart on December 24, 1947.  Dr. Stewart is survived by Polly and their children, Ms. Jeanne Elizabeth Turner, wife of Rev. Thomas Boyd Turner,  and Paul Wilder Stewart, husband of Dawn Dickie Stewart,  as well as by his grandchildren:  Benjamin James Turner, Kathryn Elizabeth Turner,  Alan Churchill Stewart, and Tana Wilder Stewart.  He is also survived by his sister Louise Stewart Lominac, wife of Harold Lominac, and by his brother Thomas Stewart, husband of  Ina Stewart.   He was preceded in death by his brother James T. Stewart, husband of Lawana Stewart, and his sister Evelyn Stewart Everett, wife of Rev. Joseph Everett.  

Dr. Stewart enjoyed gardening, reading, writing, fishing, travel and golf.  During retirement he wrote an autobiography, "A Garden of Memories."  He also wrote Sunday Devotionals for the High Point Enterprise newspaper, as well as scholarly works on "Religious liberty in the USSR of 1967",  "Long range church planning",  and "childhood conversion experiences".  

A memorial service will be held in the Green Street Baptist Church Worship Center, 303 N. Rotary Drive, High Point, at 11a.m. Saturday, July 23.  The service will be preceded by visitation with the family from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at the same location.  Interment will follow in Floral Garden Park Cemetery, High Point, NC.   The Rev. Frank Hensley, pastor, will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Piedmont Crossing Benevolent Fund,100 Hedrick Drive, Thomasville, NC 27360  or to the Green Street Baptist "Lottie Moon Mission" Fund, 1701 Westchester Drive, high Point, NC  27262
