Lawrence Charles Byerly, 94, died after a long illness on Thursday, January 17, 2013, at the High Point Hospice in High Point, NC.  

He was born in High Point, NC to Charles and Claudie Carroll Byerly.  Lawrence served as a Corporal in the South Pacific, with the 4th Division US Marines during WWII and was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal (6/15/44 -7/9/44);  Combat Action Ribbon w/2 gold stars; Presidential Unit Citation w/ 2 blue stars (Saipan, Iwo Jima);  Good Conduct Medal; American Campaign Medal;  Asiatic/Pacific Medal w/ 4 bronze stars; Victory Medal WWII; and the National Defense Service Medal.

Lawrence was employed with Allied Chemical Fiber Division and was awarded the Outstanding Business Achiever by the president of Allied Chemical Division, and retired in 1979.  Also, he worked at Burlington Industries; Manager of Stretch Yarns Inc. and Hickory Throwing Company, both of Hickory, NC; he did consulting work for various textile companies (research and development, textile manufacturing on d.c.) and held various yarn and machine patents.  He was a member of Westchester Baptist Church, High Point, NC.;  Member of Lexington Memorial Lodge 475, 55 years; Blue Lodge, Lexington, NC.;  Life member of American Legion Post 87, VFW; Disabled American Veterans, 4th Division Association member, Chapter #3; Quantico, VA 4th Marine Division, Carolina Chapter #26;  former member of High Point Elks Lodge, High Point Moose Lodge #693 and Oakview Country Club.

He was preceded by his first wife, Annie Elizabeth White, who died May 20, 1988 and is survived by his second wife, Louise Miller Byerly; two daughters, Ms. Belendia Byerly- Abee, High Point, NC and Mrs. Wayne (Bonnie) Smith, Tallahassee, FL; 6 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, 2 step-children, 4 step-grandchildren and 1 step great-grandchild; brother, Billy R. Byerly, Denver, Colorado and Guide dog (and special friend), Fonda.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 21, 2013, at Westchester Baptist Church, 135 Westchester Drive, High Point, NC.  The family will receive friends at the church from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Floral Garden Park Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Guiding Eye Dogs for the Blind, 611 Granite Springs Road, Yorktown Heights, NY 10598; Westchester Baptist Church, 135 Westchester Dr., High Point, NC: and the Hospice of the Piedmont.

Final arrangements are entrusted to Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point, NC.
