Donald Glenn Carter

Mr. Donald Glenn “Coach” Carter, 84, passed away Monday, March 27, 2017 at Shannon Gray Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Mr. Carter was born on April 29, 1932 in High Point a son of the late Lawrence Charles Carter and Georgia Myrtle Milloway Carter. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving his country form 1952-1954 and a former cutting room supervisor for Silver-Craft Furniture Co. in High Point.

Don was a member of Trinity Heights Wesleyan Church.

He was an avid sportsman and a superior athlete who played softball and basketball. For many years he played on his company baseball teams until he found a bigger passion for coaching and umpiring youth basketball. Don was an advocate for the kids he coached and often fought city hall for his beliefs in their use of parks and recreation facilities. In his spare time, he also enjoyed shopping at flea markets and finding antiques.

Mr. Carter is survived by a daughter, DonElla Carter of High Point; a sister, Lois Carter Taylor and her husband, Buddy of Archdale; a brother, Lawrence Ray Carter of Archdale; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Melvin and Ralph Carter; two sisters, Marie Vest and Carol Winfrey Cruthis; and a much beloved grand-dog, Nellie June Carter.

A visitation to celebrate Don’s life will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, March 30, 2017 at Cumby Family Funeral Service, 1015 Eastchester Drive, High Point.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Guilford County Animal Shelter, 4525 W Wendover Ave, Greensboro, NC 27409.
