Margaret Anne (Peggy) Donald Amos

July 19, 1928 ~ April 21, 2017 (age 88) 88 Years Old

Margaret Anne  (Peggy)  Donald Amos, 88  passed away peacefully April 21, 2017 after a period of declining health.

Peggy was born in her family's small farming town of Groometown, NC, where she lived an idyllic childhood surrounded by fields of tobacco, acres of pasture, and farming animal friends.  She was the granddaughter of Zachariah Lee Groome and Minnie Armfield Groome, who instilled strong values of hard work, perseverance and loving thy neighbor with heart and soul.  Her parents, Annie Groome Donald and William Blanton Donald later moved to Sunset Hills in Greensboro where she lived her teenage years during World War II.  She remembered evenings with her parents listening to the radio for war reports as her only brother, Dr. William (Bill) Donald, Jr, was stationed in Germany.   Peggy was a life-long Methodist with memberships at Groometown Methodist Church, West Market Methodist Church in Greensboro, and was a faithful member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church.  She had a strong faith and was diligent in her quest to live in ways she believed God wanted her to live.

Peggy was graduated from Women’s College (now UNCG) in 1948 with a BA in Chemistry and  then taught school in Brown Summit, NC.   In 1949, she met Harold Lindsay Amos on a blind date orchestrated by her High Point cousin, Zana Groome.  After a fun-filled courtship, they married on February 11, 1950.  They built a life together in High Point and contributed through service and gifts to the city and institutions they loved.

Peggy was very active in the community serving as a past president and vice president of the High Point Junior League.  Through the years she served on the boards of the YWCA, the United Fund, the Community Planning Council, the Mental Health Association, and the High Point Cancer Society.

At Wesley Memorial, she taught Sunday School for 12 years, served on the Council of Children’s Ministries and participated as a counseling teacher.  She was a member of the Women’s Society of Christian Service.

She served on the Board of Directors of the High Point Literary League for 11 years and was President for two of those years.   She was chairman of the High Point (Guilford County) chapter of the NC Museum of History Associates and served on the board of Community Concerts.   Peggy was an active member of the Alexander Martin Chapter of the D.A.R.

Peggy never forgot a friend's birthday or an ailing neighbor.  She had a large drawer overflowing with thoughtful cards, at the ready, to send out to brighten someone's day.  In 1972, Peggy suffered a paralyzing stroke and at age 42, had to learn to walk and talk again.  Her family values and upbringing helped her make a remarkable recovery, never yielding to weariness of the spirit.  In spite of these  handicaps, she continued to live in service of others, especially doting on her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Peggy was fun!   She always smiled and loved to laugh at the humor in any situation.   She was always impeccably dressed and her appearance was always complete with “ear-bobs", lipstick, pocket book, and bright smile!  Her sparkle and her love of people ensured she would never miss a party or celebration!

She faced with courage and love, the care of her husband, Harold Lindsay Amos, a victim of early onset Alzheimer’s disease who passed in 1998.   She was a devoted caregiver to her elderly mother and her husband at the same time.  She faced life’s obstacles a day at a time with a happy heart and positive spirit.

Peggy and Harold enjoyed their many friends, the beauty and humor of life, and always remembered others in service before self.

Her life was a positive example for her three children, Sharon Amos Shealy and husband Dr. Ronald B. Shealy of Winston-Salem;  Charlotte Amos;  Lin Amos and wife Nancy Moore Amos of High Point.

She is also survived by her grandchildren: Chip Shealy and wife, Elizabeth of Charleston, SC;   Lindy Shealy Mickle and husband L. R. of Pawley's Island, SC;  Brantley Hull Springett and husband Matt of Raleigh, NC; Scott Hull of Charlotte, NC; Maggie Hull of Raleigh, NC,  Kirk Amos of Kelly, WY;   Mac Amos of Charlotte, NC;  Sam Amos of Valencia, Spain and 4 great grandchildren:  Jackson and Whit Shealy;  CeCe and Ankers Springett, and a little Mickle on the way.

Peggy was fortunate to have so many close friendships and appreciated the many calls and visits she received in recent months.  She would want to thank all of her many caregivers at PennyByrn, Westchester Harbour,  Westchester Manor,  and Hospice of the Piedmont where she received great love and attention.    She was grateful for the friendship and companionship of Karen Dill who contributed so greatly to her quality of life these last few years.

There will be a service celebrating Peggy’s life in the sanctuary of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church at 3:00pm on Sunday, April 30 with visitation afterward in the Asbury Room, and other times at the home of her son:  Lin Amos.
