HIGH POINT – Sue Anderson Wood, 79, died Tuesday, August 15, 2017, at her residence. She was born June 4, 1938, in Greenwood, Mississippi, to Stacy Likens Anderson and Carl William Anderson, both of whom preceded her in death. She received her B.A. Degree in English from the University of Mississippi, where she was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority. She taught school in Memphis, TN, New Orleans, LA, Eglin Air Force Base, FL, and St. Louis, MO, before getting her M.A. degree in Education with an emphasis in English from The University of Kansas. She then taught at National College in Kansas City, KS, DeVry Institute of Technology in Kansas City, MO, and GTCC, Jamestown Campus. For 27 years, she was married to Fred M. Wood, MD, who preceded her in death. She lived in High Point for 39 years and was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, The Eighth Day Unity Group, The Junior League of High Point, Dialogue II Book Club, High Point Literary League, String and Splinter Club, Friends of the Library, and High Point Country Club. She gathered food for the Open Door Ministry and tutored in the Junior League Jump Start Program for third and fifth graders. Mrs. Wood was Editor of the Junior League Highlights in 1977, Editor for “The Rep Spotlights” for the Missouri Repertory Theater in 1987, and Project Chairman for the book, Out of the Black Bag, a history of medicine in High Point which was presented in honor of Doctors’ Day in 1974. For 15 years, she worked part-time for Maitland-Smith Furniture, Inc. Mrs. Wood often practiced “random acts-of-kindness” for which she wanted no recognition, and enjoyed a good laugh as much as anyone, displaying a sharp wit and hearty sense of humor for as long as she lived. Surviving are two daughters and a son: Laura Wood Sanborn of Lexington, Suzanne Wood Lowe, and her husband, Bill, of High Point, and Fred M. Wood, Jr. and his wife, Sylvia, of Charlotte; and by four grandchildren: Fred Marshall Wood III, Mason Grosvenor Wood, Lauren Catherine Griffith, and Caroline Elise Anderson Griffith. She is also survived by her special friend of 25 years, Dr. David Ellefson of Banner Elk; and a dear friend, Ginger Priddy of High Point. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, August 26, 2017, at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Jeff Patterson officiating. A private family inurnment will follow the service in the church columbarium with a reception to follow in the Asbury Room at the church. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Friday, August 25, 2017, at Cumby Family Funeral Service, 1015 Eastchester Drive, High Point.
