Tribute

Mrs. Ann Welborn Young Upchurch, 75, resident of River Landing, passed away January 9, 2021 at her home.

She was the loving wife of Tommy Dorsey Upchurch to whom she was married for 49 years.  Ann was born in High Point on December 5, 1945, a daughter to the late Dennis and Hazel Young.  She grew up in a Christian home and her faith was her defining characteristic.  She and her husband lived that faith daily.  It was essential to them while they fought her failing health for over 30 years.

Ann graduated from High Point Central High School in 1964 and later attended Meredith College in Raleigh, graduating with a major in education and a minor in religion.  She then taught elemantary school in Winston-Salem for several years while serving as youth minister at Lexington St. Baptist Church for two summers.  Ann then decided to study Interior Design and joined her father and brother at Young’s Furniture retail store.  It became her passion and she loved being the buyer for the many beautiful lines found at Young’s.  Later on, she, Tommy, and son David founded Ann David Thomas, Ltd. which featured exceptionally diverse and eclectic group of furniture and objects designed by exceptional designer Jay Johnstone.  Her passion was soon limited with the onset of Parkinson’s.

Ann grew up in First Baptist Church and she and Tommy were very active in their bus ministry and Sunday school program.  She was also involved in the Girls in Action program.  After moving to Emerywood Baptist Church, she continued to serve the Girls in Action program, as well as serving on the first Youth for Christ board in High Point and teaching Sunday school.  Within the community, she was active in the High Point Junior League and also the Y Teens program at the YWCA.  Ann also was a devoted gardner and loved nature, a trait of her father who had a yard full of award winning roses.

In additon to her husband, Ann is survived by three children, David Upchurch and wife Allison of Colfax, Matthew Upchurch of Asheville, and Elizabeth Bowser and husband Bob of High Point; six grandchildren; Beatrice Bowser and Connor, Graham, Walker, Sadie, and Harper Upchurch; and a brother, John Young and wife Betsy of Albemarle and their son, Hunter.
