Mr. Artie Doran Clayton, 87, resident of Burlington, died June 6, 2019 at Liberty Commons Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation.
Mr. Clayton born April 27, 1932 in Vance County, a son to the late Amasa and Lorena Hale Clayton. After service in the U.S. Air Force, he began a career in law enforcement, retiring after 30 years with the North Carolina Highway Patrol and Division of Motor Vehicles. Prior to retirement, as an honor to his state service, he was awarded The Order of the Long Leaf Pine. He also was a mason, having joined the Millbrook #97 Masonic Lodge in 1961. In 1957, he married the former Bertie Long, who preceded him in death in 2013. In addition to his wife, he was also preceded in death by his daughter, Rachel Hackler.
Surviving are his sons, Ivan Clayton and wife Donna of Elon and David Clayton and wife Frances of Pinehurst; his sister, Patricia C. Roberts of Henderson; and grandchildren, Gray Clayton of Elon, Austin Clayton of Pinehurst and Evan Clayton of Pinehurst.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday in the chapel of the Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point with Rev. Gary Williams officiating. Interment will follow at Floral Garden Park Cemtery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to The Masonic Home for Children, 600 College St. Oxford, N.C., 27565.
