Tribute

HIGH POINT - Avis Moore Madison, 84, died Wednesday, September 12, 2018, at Pennybyrn of Maryfield.

Avis was born on August 27, 1934 in Rutherfordton, NC to Roxie and Bert Moore. She attended Walkertown High School where she met her husband of 59 years, T.G. Madison who preceded her in death.

Avis attended Women’s College in Greensboro until she was married in 1954. She and TG were active and faithful members of Jamestown United Methodist Church.  Avis taught Sunday school, served several terms as the President of the United Methodist Women, and was an advocate and leader of many missions programs. She was a member of the Austin P Fortney Sunday School Class alongside many lifelong friends.  If something was needed in the church building, Avis wanted to be there to help.  She could be found in the kitchen, cleaning floors and pews, keeping nursery, attending Bible studies, and attending any musical program held at the church and beyond. She loved her church and supported it in every possible way.  She loved music. She loved nature.  She loved her family and her friends. Even on her hardest days that love was unwavering.

For many years she served as a teacher assistant and a library assistant in the Guilford County Schools.  She was heard to say that some of her happiest years were when the “whole family” was at Ragsdale High School.

Many wonderful memories were made with Avis/Mom/Nana while at Lake Junaluska.  She was most happy rocking on her front porch with her grandchildren around her. She was the “reader of stories, singer of songs, and world class porch-swinger.”

She is survived by her brother, Joe (Evelyn), three children David Madison (Kyle), Julie Nowlan (Scott), and John Madison (Shayne), 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life service will be held in the sanctuary of Jamestown United Methodist Church at 11:00 AM, Friday, September 21, 2018, with Rev. Tom Latimer and Rev. Jim Watford officiating.  A private family burial will immediately follow the service.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 10:45 AM Friday at the church prior to the service.

Condolences may be sent to the family online on Avis’ tribute page at www.cumbyfuneral.com.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Pennybyrn of Maryfield and Hospice of the Piedmont for their kindness and compassion.
