ARCHDALE – Betty Jones Warren, 89, died Thursday, May 14, 2020, at Graybrier Nursing and Retirement Center after several months of declining health.
She was born November 3, 1930 in Trinity, the daughter of Garland and Verna Savage Jones. A resident of the area all her life, she attended Caraway School, graduated from Trinity High School in 1948, and was graduated from Jones Business College in High Point. Her first job was secretary to the president of Textile Insurance Company; later she was the secretary to the city executive of Wachovia Bank. She was then a legal secretary for over thirty years, most of which were with the firm of Haworth, Riggs, Kuhn, Haworth and Miller, where she retired.
Well-known for her organizational skills, Betty was active in community, civic, and educational life of Archdale and Trinity. She was a long-time member of the Archdale-Trinity Woman’s Club, Pride and Patience Garden Club and a member of the local Red Hat group; at various times, she served as an officer in all these groups. A charter member of the Trindale Woman’s Club, she was selected as Woman of the Year in both 1965 and 1973; and she was selected Archdale’s Citizen of the Year in 1976. A member of Archdale United Methodist Church, she was a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class and was in charge of the class’s chicken pie fundraiser ministry for many years. She served as president of the Trindale Elementary School PTA and was active in other school functions and fundraisers over the years.
Betty married David Warren of Archdale on February 14, 1951, and they made their home here until his death in 1989. Together they worked for the betterment of the community; they were on the committees to start Trindale Swim Club and the Trindale Baseball League. They and others petitioned door-to-door, working to get a special supplemental school tax on the local ballot. This tax is still in place, providing extra funds to the Archdale-Trinity schools.
Besides her husband, Betty was predeceased by her parents, her brother and sister-in-law, Garland and Louise Comer Jones, and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mary Warren White and her husband, P.E. White.
Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Dale and Marie Warren of Charlotte and Dan and Denise Warren of Trinity; one grandson, David Warren of Trinity; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Dick and Billie Jones of Weddington and Ken and Martha Jones of Colfax; one sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Pauline Warren Hines and her husband, Pat Hines, of Archdale; and aunts, Alese Jones Harris of Archdale, Jewel Jones Farlow of Trinity, and Jo Jones of Thomasville. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and their families.
Private graveside service will be held at Floral Garden Memorial Park Cemetery. A memorial service celebrating Betty’s life will be held at Archdale United Methodist Church at a later date.
There will not be a formal visitation but friends are welcome to pay their respects from 2:00 to 5:00 PM Sunday at Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale.
