David Cameron (Bulldog) Smith, New Englander by birth; North Carolinian in death, was born May 10, 1933 in Stoughton, Massachusetts and passed away November 12, 2018 at the Hospice House in High Point. He was a son of George and Madeline Smith. His parents, brother, and two sisters preceded him in death.
He leaves a wife, Shirley H. Smith, son David Cameron Smith II, daughter Cheryl S. Conley, and sister Nancy Smith. He also leaves five grandchildren who gave him so much pride and joy : Major D. Cameron Smith III (Rachel) , Craig H. Smith (Charelette), Rachel S. Jolly (Lee), Richard D. Conley, and Kendall S. Stafford (Heath). He leaves seven great grandchildren carrying on his family happiness.
With his family, Bulldog settled in High Point, NC in 1973. Entering the Army at an early age, he served in many units and retired as a Special Forces Lt. Col. He received the Silver Star, Bronze Star and Purple Heart as a Vietnam veteran in addition to other awards and citations.
For many years, until his death, he trained Special Forces in the Robin Sage program. He returned to Vietnam seven times with his humanitarian group. He helped establish a local STMP project sponsoring many Montagnards settling in the US.
He was a devoted member of Special Forces Association, Special Operation Association, many other military organizations, as well as Masonic Lodge 699. He regularly attended at First Baptist Church of High Point.
Visitation will be from 6-8 pm Tuesday at Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale. Funeral service will be held at the First Baptist Church of High Point at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday. Interment will be held in Fayetteville’s LaFayette Cemetery at 2 p.m. Wednesday with full military rites.
