Don Gilbert Miller

Don Gilbert Miller, formerly of Trinity, died April 5, 2021.

Don was born January 2, 1940 in Lexington NC, the first child of Leroy Bostian Miller and Ethel Berrier Miller, a birthday he shared with his beloved Granny, Etta Reece Berrier.  Both sides of his family had resided in Davidson County for generations, his father’s in Cotton Grove and his mother’s in Midway.  After living in Durham, Statesville, Rockingham and Midway during his early childhood, the family moved to Winston Salem in 1950 where Don would excel in his studies at Gray High School and earned an academic scholarship to UNC Chapel Hill.  Don would complete his undergraduate studies early and graduate from the UNC School of Law in 1963.  During that time, he met Ruth Walston of Siler City. The two would marry and together raise three children during their 52 years of marriage:  Angela Elycee Miller Dyson, Scott Gilbert Miller, and Carla Virginia Miller Mikhail. 

Following law school, Don clerked for NC Supreme Court Justice Carlisle Higgins and then practiced law in Archdale and High Point, specializing in the fields of wills, estates, and real estate.  Always devoted to serving his community, he was the first attorney for Archdale, helping guide its incorporation during the 1960s.  While his health permitted, he was known for his Sunday school teaching and leadership at Archdale United Methodist Church, and his love of history, gardening, archaeology, the Boston Red Sox and UNC athletics.

He is survived by his daughters Angela of Trinity, NC and Carla (Ashraf) of Jacksonville, NC; grandsons Shawn Bazen, Spencer Dyson (Tiffany), Michael Mikhail, and Mark Mikhail; great grandchildren Kirsten and Seth Bazen and Isis, Emerald, and Evan Miller. He is also survived by his brother Barry Miller (Dianne) of Winston-Salem.  In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his parents, wife Ruth, son Scott, and grandson Robert Miller.

Funeral services will be at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, April 12, at Archdale United Methodist Church, with Reverend Harold Shives and Reverend Dr. Jeff Patterson officiating. (Due to Covid 19, church capacity will be limited to 50% capacity, face masks are required and social distancing will be practiced). Burial will follow at Canaan United Methodist Church Cemetery in Midway.  The family will receive friends at Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale, on Sunday night, April 11, from 6-8 p.m.
