Dorris (Quinn) Koontz

Dorris Quinn Koontz, 102, resident of High Point, died April 18 at River Landing at Sandy Ridge.

A native of Duplin County, she was born December 8, 1916, daughter of James L. and Myrtle Lee Quinn. Dorris taught in the North Carolina Public School System for more than 42 years with the majority of her years spent at Oak Hill Elementary in High Point. She was a proud ECU graduate and a member of First Presbyterian Church for 72 years.

She served as a Sunday School teacher, Circle Chairman, played piano for Sunday School and received the churches Honorary Lifetime Membership Award In 2011. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International and served as President of the local chapter. Among her other accomplishments, she served two terms as President of the High Point Unit of North Carolina Retired School Personnel. Dorris was a long time member of the Presbyterian Home Band, and with her husband Gilbert, delivered Mobile Meals for fifteen years. On top of this, she made time to be the Den Mother of her sons Cub Scout Den.

Dorris was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Gilbert C. Koontz and her four brothers.  She is survived by her son, G. Quinn Koontz of Raleigh and her sister Eugenia Quinn Blake of Chadbourn.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 23 at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in High Point with Rev. Dr. Erin Bowers officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Hill Memorial Park Cemetery in Lexington.  Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Monday, April 22 at Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point.
