HIGH POINT – Douglas Smith Riddick, 76, died Tuesday, December 11, 2018, at High Point Medical Center.

Doug was born September 28, 1942, in High Point and was the son of the late Delmar Smith and Irene Sparks Riddick.  He served in the Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Delaware Army National Guard and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Columbus College of Art and Design.  He was an industrial designer with Harper Landell, ILC (the company which built the space suits for the first moon walk), DuPont in Delaware, Leeds Luggage and Paul Brayton.  He later moved back to his home town and worked in landscape design with the family business, Riddick Greenhouses and Nurseries, in offset printing at Southern Graphics in Greensboro and at America Metal Treating, Inc.

Douglas was brought up in both the Baptist and Quaker faith, and in later years, enjoyed attending Springfield Friends Quaker Meeting in High Point. He had a variety of interests including bicycling, gardening and yard work, watching Panthers football and baseball (especially the Dodgers), smoking a good cigar, his yellow mustang and discussing and debating politics.  He was an accomplished artist and designer by trade and as a result of his work with ILC was interested in the space program, space exploration and NASA.  He also enjoyed eating dinner at Giannos in High Point where he was a regular practically every Saturday night.

He is survived by his wife, Marcia Witty Riddick, whom he married in February 1968; daughter, Adrea Riddick of High Point; son, Eric S. Riddick of Archdale; and a brother, Gwyn Riddick (Susan) of Archdale. Also surviving are a nephew, Erin Riddick and his wife, Jessica; a niece, Alana Bollmann and her husband, Dan; 2 great nephews and 2 great nieces.
