High Point—Mrs. Elmira Whitley Whetstone, 90 of High Point died Tuesday March 06 2018 at the Hospice Home of High Point.

She was born November 8, 1927, in Raeford, NC and was the daughter of Henry Ward Beecher Whitley and Beulah Funderburk Whitley. After graduating from Woman’s College University of NC in Greensboro in 1949, she attended Presbyterian school of Christian Education in Richmond, VA after graduating in 1951 she served for several years as Director of Christian Education at First Presbyterian Church in Henderson, NC. She moved to Durham, NC where she served as Social Worker with the Durham County Dept. of Social Services and later retired after 18 years at the Cleveland County Dept. of Social Services in Shelby, NC

She met and married Paul A. Whetstone of Durham in 1953 and they became parents of three children; Susan Larimore of Greensboro, Paul A. Whetstone III of Walla Walla WA, and Ruth Schallert of Timberlake, NC and Grandparents of Holly Coggins and husband Daniel of Charlotte, NC and Skye Whetstone of Walla Walla , WA., and Evan Schallert of Timberlake, NCShe is also survived by a sister-in law Margaret K. Whitley of Blue Bell, PA, Gloria W. Houser and Husband J. Anthony Houser of Cary, NC several Nieces and Nephews as well as great nieces and nephews. Special family friends are Lance Harrington, Arielle Cooley and David Paletta.

Mrs. Whetstone was preceded in death by her husband, Paul A. Whetstone, Sister Mary H. Whitley, two brothers, Charles Edwin Whitley and Robert W. Whitley.

Mrs. Whetstone’s volunteer work included 12 years with the Cleveland Regional Hospital Auxiliary in Shelby, NC ten years with the Girl Scout as troop leader and as Neighborhood Chairman with the Catawba and Pioneer Girl Scout Council. After moving to High Point to be near her family in 2001, she joined Covenant Church United Methodist and enjoyed serving as a circle Chairman, member and teacher in the Whitlock Class, member of the Silver Tones Choir and Chairperson of the OWLS Senior Group. She also participated in the Community Mobile Meals home delivery program in High Point.

A service to celebrate Elmira’s life will be held 11:00 am Saturday March 10, 2018 at Covenant Church United Methodist 1526 Skeet Club Rd. High Point, NC with Rev Michelle Foster-Beckerleg. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be directed to Covenant Church United Methodist, High Point, NC to Mobile Meals of High Point, P.O. Box 6666, High Point, or to a charity of one’s choice. The burial will be at Maplewood Cemetery in Durham, NC
