TRINITY- George Wood Sumner, 78, passed away on Tuesday, April 6, 2021.
He was born on July 5, 1942 in Randolph County, a son of the late Riley Woodrow “Woody” and Grace Skeen Sumner. A resident of this area all his life he retired from High Point Fire Department and was a lifelong member of Poplar Ridge Friends Meeting. George enjoyed carpentry, tinkering with old equipment and raising cattle. His true love and passion was spending time with his family; especially his grandchildren. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend and will be dearly missed. In addition to his parents, preceding him in death were his brothers, Darrell and Vonny Sumner and his sister, Euphon Metzger.
He is survived by his wife 42 plus years, Lois Surratt Sumner; his children, George “Riley” Sumner, Dee Sumner Branning (Ricky Fleming), Lee Sumner Hartsell and husband Bruce, and Greg Sumner; his stepson, Brian Hyde; his sister Carolyn Hedrick and husband Bill. Also surviving his grandchildren, Randall Hartsell and wife Brittany, Jessica Branning Goodwin, Shandall Hartsell Younts and husband Chris and Daniel Hartsell and five great grandchildren.
A service to celebrate George’s life will be held on Saturday morning, April 10, at 11:00 a.m., at Poplar Ridge Friends Meeting, with Pastor Randy Quate officiating. The committal service will follow in the meeting cemetery. His family will receive friends on Saturday, from 10:00 until 10:45 a.m., in the meetinghouse at Poplar Ridge Friends.
