Harvey Speaks, Jr., 92, of High Point, died May 14, 2018, at Pine Ridge Rehab Center.
Mr. Speaks was born July 5, 1925, in Forsyth County, a son of the late Harvey Speaks and Rosa Belle Southern Speaks. He attended public schools in Guilford and Forsyth while in residence at the Methodist Children’s Home.
Mr. Speaks served in the United States Navy during WWII. On January 30, 1946, he married the former Iris Juanita Hunsucker of Jamestown. Harvey later co-owned and operated the Mercury and Holiday Inn Barber Shops in HIgh Point. Harvey enjoyed his work and was highly regarded by his customers.
The couple lived in High Point, where they attended First United Methodist Church until Juanita’s passing in 2006. Mr. Speaks was in failing health for several years and resided at Pine Ridge Rehab Center in Thomasville.
Harvey is survived by his daughters, Toni Burchette (Robert) of Lexington, Susan Gorman of Florida; a brother, Paul Speaks of Florida; a sister, Betty Shaver of Asheville; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church June 16 at 10 a.m. Interment will take place in the church columbarium. Visitation and a reception will immediately follow the service.
