Mr. Hayne Livingston Koon, 100, died Monday, July 3, 2017, at his residence.

He was born August 16, 1916, in York County, SC, and was the son of the late William Rahn and Felicia Chapman Koon. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Frances Gilliland Koon, whom he married on July 3, 1941; a sister, Mary Charlotte Koon; and four brothers, Bill, Woodrow, Walter and Ike Koon.

He was a member of St. Michael’s Lutheran Church and retired from the U.S. Army.  He began his military service in the 1930’s with the Pack Artillery Unit which carried everything from ammunition to food using mules.  During World War II, he was in the German invasion forces and was later stationed in Germany, Japan and Korea.  He retired from the Army as a recruiter serving in the High Point office for six years.  In later years, he loved to share stories about his army experience especially the opportunity he had to meet and talk to General Patton.  Following their meeting, General Patton wrote his father to thank him for the service of his five sons.  In later years, he participated in the Flight of Honor to Washington, DC.  Following his Army career, he retired as Manager from American Fasteners.  He loved all animals and in his retirement years, enjoyed camping with his wife in their favorite place, Glendale Springs, NC.

He is survived by a daughter, Charlotte Koon Jones of High Point; a granddaughter, Catherine Jones Wangerin and her husband, Steven, of Jacksonville, NC; two great-granddaughters, Stephanie Nicole and Amy Danielle Wangerin of Jacksonville; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved cat, Scaredy Cat.
