Helen Loretta (Holbrook) Wood

HIGH POINT – Helen Loretta Holbrook Wood, 88, died Tuesday, September 12, 2023, at Westchester Manor.

She was born May 9, 1935, in Guilford County and was the daughter of the late Curtis Ervin and Beulah Yow Holbrook. She was a faithful and devoted wife, mother and homemaker and a member of Green Street Baptist Church. Helen had worked with Shore’s Dry Cleaners and enjoyed going to flea markets and yard sales. She resided at Westchester Harbour Assisted Living for almost two years before moving to Westchester Manor due to declining health. At Westchester Harbour, she loved playing bingo, her word games and crafts.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Melvin Wood, Sr., whom she married on February 10, 1956; sisters, Dorothy Robertson, Barbara Whedbee and Lorene Hurt; and brother, John Delmar Holbrook.

Helen is survived by her two daughter, Pam Bundy (Jeff) of Stanley and Susan Blanchard of Thomasville; son, James Melvin Wood, Jr. of High Point; three grandchildren, James Nicholas Hutchins (Christy) of Thomasville, Christy Renee Knight of High Point and Dustin Todd Stradley (Maddie) of Orlando, Florida; four great-grandchildren; sister, Frances Cheyne of Auburndale, Florida; sister-in-law, Janice Wood of North Wilkesboro; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service celebrating Helen’s life will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, September 16, 2023, in the Chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point with Pastor Keith Stradley and Rev. Roland Cavanaugh officiating. Graveside service will be held 3:00 PM Saturday at Bethany Baptist Church Cemetery in North Wilkesboro.

The family will receive friends from 9:45 to 10:45 AM Saturday at the funeral home prior to the service.
