Iris Elaine (Ivey) Hedgecock

Iris Elaine Ivey Hedgecock of New Bern, NC, born April 17, 1939 went to her heavenly reward on December 1, 2020. She was born in Sparta, NC to Marie and Lawrence Ivey. She is preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Ted and Ralph Ivey, her first husband, Delos Samuel Hedgecock, Jr. “Sam”, her daughters Deborah Elaine Hedgecock and Pamela Dee Carter and Her current husband George Walter. 

She is survived by her son Delos Samuel Hedgecock, III and his wife Cathleen Hedgecock, her grandchildren, Uriel Hedgecock and his wife Rebecca Hedgecock, Anna Hedgecock, Cassandra Carter, Morgan Fraley, and Emma Hedgecock and her great grandson Samuel Douglas Hedgecock.

 Iris was devout in her faith and made an impact on her church communities throughout the course of her life. Iris loved her family and her community and left her footprint wherever she went. She married Sam ten days after she graduated from Alleghany High School. She raised her 3 children at their home in Colfax. There she was involved in the Sandy Ridge Church Community and a red cross volunteer. Upon her husband’s retirement she moved to Badin lake where she became involved in the Chandler’s Grove Church community. When it was time for a change Iris and Sam moved to New Bern, NC in 1998. They found a home at Riverdale United Methodist Church. Iris, mom, Nana she was an ace at all these roles. 

Iris always had a twinkle in her eyes, a smile and kind encouraging words for friends and strangers alike. She loved to play golf, take walks and spend time with family and friends. She never met a stranger and easily made lasting friendships. She was a loving and generous soul and will be greatly missed.

The family will have a private graveside service in High Point, and then a public Celebration of Life Service for her community at a later date.
