James Cornelius Speight Jr., 76, best known as “Coach”, died October 16, 2018 in his residence of Raleigh, North Carolina, formerly of High Point.
Coach is survived by his sons Trip, Brett, and Patrick, as well as his sister, Martha Adams Connelly and 2 beloved grandchildren, JC and Savannah.
Coach was born May 13, 1942 to the late James and Frances Speight of Rocky Mount, NC. He graduated from the University of North Carolina 1964, where had a prestigious college career playing baseball earning many accolades and being a member of the only undefeated ACC team in school history. After graduation, Coach played for a few years working his way up through the minor league system for the Philadelphia Phillies. Coach found his true home and passion when he became the head baseball coach and professor for then High Point College, now High Point University. His life was dedicated to baseball and he was a leader to so many players through the years. Still holding the title for the winningest coach in school history and always kept the team at the top of the conference standings.
Beyond his life on the field Coach was a beloved father and friend to many. He was very well known around town and among the athletic community. You could often find him visiting George’s Pizza or the Claddagh where he enjoyed watching live music and spending time with friends. He will be deeply missed by friends, family and all those that knew him.
A celebration of life will be held at the Hayworth Chapel at High Point University, 750 Panther Drive, High Point, North Carolina at 3:00 PM Saturday, October 20, 2018. Reverend Preston Davis will officiate. During the service the family will welcome remembrances shared by friends. The family will greet friends following the service in the fellowship hall of Hayworth Chapel.
