TRINITY – James “Jim” Obed Hancock, Jr., 85, died Tuesday, May 26, 2020, at his residence.
He was born August 7, 1934, in High Point and was the son of the late James Obed Hancock, Sr. and Margaret “Peggy” Mackichan Hancock. He was a member of Archdale Friends Meeting and a member of the John Archdale Sunday school class. Jim served in the Navy Reserve from 1954 until 1962.
Jim worked in the food service industry for the majority of his career. His first job after high school was in a local grocery store. Soon afterwards he took a position as route salesman in Asheboro with Merita Breads. He was later promoted to route supervisor and moved to the Greensboro distribution center. Several years after moving to Greensboro, Jim began a long relationship with Hunt-Wesson Foods. He started as territory sales manager in the Greensboro area and subsequently was promoted to district sales manager, assistant regional sales manager then regional sales manager – moves that took him and his family to Omaha, Chicago, Detroit, Charlotte, Atlanta and New Jersey. After fourteen years with Hunt-Wesson Foods, Jim left the company to bring his family back to North Carolina. Returning home, Jim secured his ‘dream job’ with Escalon Packers of Modesto, California. For ten years, he served as Escalon’s Eastern Regional Sales Manager until the company was sold, and he officially retired. In his retirement years, Jim worked part-time for the High Point University Transportation Department as well as the Van York Automotive Group. He was an outstanding salesman, positive motivator and genuine human being who loved his family and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by son, David Hancock; and brother, Donald L. Hancock.
