HIGH POINT- Mrs. Janice Lee (Burland) Burns, 81, passed away Saturday, June 14, 2014 at Pennyburn at Maryfield . She was the loving wife of Riley W. Burns to whom she was married for 59 years.
Mrs. Burns was born on May 1, 1933 in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, a daughter of the late Carlyle and Mildred (Ruby) Burland. She received a general teaching certificate and an adult education teaching certificate from New York State University, and graduated from the University of Syracuse with a master’s degree in Librarian Science,. She was a former Librarian for over 32 years until her retirement. During that time she worked as a technical librarian for Nestlé and was also a substitute librarian for the Baldwinsville School District.
In her spare time she enjoyed tole painting, and quilting. She and her husband traveled often, either by sailboat and motor home touring the U.S, or by river boat cruises in Europe.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.
She was a member of Jamestown United Methodist Church.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Burns is survived by a son, Hugh W. Burns of Atlanta, Georgia; two granddaughters, Gennifer Burns and Krysta Burns; two brothers, Carl Burland and his wife, Judy of Westminster, Colorado, and Dean Burland and his wife, Anna of Armherst, New Hampshire; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Beverly A. Burns in 2004.
A celebration of life memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, 2014 in the chapel of Pennyburn at Maryfield with Rev. Jim Watford and Fr. Jim Solari officiating. A visitation will follow the service on Tuesday.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Association Western Carolina Chapter, 3800 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215.
