Joel Curtis "Pawpaw" Lockhart

LEXINGTON – Joel Curtis “Pawpaw” Lockhart, 68, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, September 19, 2021 at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem.

He was born March 3, 1953 in High Point and was the son of the late Albert Bertram and Evelyn May Kimball Lockhart. He was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church in Lexington and owner and operator of J.L. Lawncare, Inc. Joel, known as Pawpaw to everyone, was a football, basketball and baseball coach in the Archdale, Trinity and Davis Townsend communities for over forty years. Not only was he a sport’s coach but he was also a life coach who mentored and inspired many young people. He was an avid and fanatic Duke fan and was committed to working out and physical fitness. Pawpaw was also a committed and devoted family man who attended all of his grandchildren’s extracurricular activities.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Albert Lockhart and James Lockhart.

Joel is survived by his wife, Debbie Ellington Lockhart, whom he married on November 4, 1972; daughter, Tara Smith (Todd) of Lexington; sons, Jason Lockhart (Joy) of Gastonia and Nick Lockhart (Maggie) of Winston-Salem; seven grandchildren, Carter Bass, Landyn Smith, Journey Lockhart, Jagger Lockhart, Kelsey Flynn, Annie Flynn, and Lawton Lockhart; two brothers, Gary Lockhart of Myrtle Beach and Roger Lockhart of High Point; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service celebrating Joel’s life will be held 1:00 PM Friday, September 24, 2021 in the Chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale with Rev. Benny Clodfelter officiating. Burial will follow at Floral Garden Memorial Park Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 8:00 PM Thursday, September 23, 2021 at the funeral home.
