Johnie Harrison Hayworth

Tribute

On Sunday, December 2, 2018, Johnie Harrison Hayworth, 92, died in High Point. 

In 1947, he married June M. Newton in High Point -- the service performed by her father, Rev. C.B. Newton.

Mr. Hayworth was preceded in death by:  June, his wife of 57 years; one brother, Ray Hayworth; and two sisters, Ruth Hayworth Spurgeon and Maxine Hayworth Todd; brothers-in-law John Sulger, Laurence Todd II, Clyde Spurgeon, and C.B. Newton, Jr.; niece Patricia Todd.  He was the eldest son of the late Jerome and Grace Davis Hayworth.

He is survived by his daughter Janita Hayworth Eldridge and son-in-law Jim Eldridge of Vienna, VA; a foster daughter Shirley Duncan and husband David Duncan of Macon, GA and their three daughters;  a sister, Betty Hayworth Sulger of High Point; sister-in-law Shirley Newton; five nephews including Tommy Hayworth and wife Leisa of High Point; and nine nieces.

Mr. Hayworth graduated from Wallburg High School.  He served in the US Army 1944-46 as a technical sergeant in Great Britain, France, Belgium and Germany. He supervised production lines for four decades at Western Electric / AT&T in Winston-Salem.  His avocation throughout his life was farming and gardening.  Mr. Hayworth was a member of the group which planned the construction of the new Wallburg School and Ledford High School.  He was a member of the VFW. 

As a member of Calvary UMC and then Covenant Church United Methodist, Mr. Hayworth served as a Sunday School Class president and teacher, and he volunteered his carpentry and electrical skills for numerous church projects, as well as home construction and repairs for his extended family and neighbors.

Funeral services will be Saturday, December 8 at 11:00am at Covenant Church United Methodist, 1526 Skeet Club Road, High Point, NC 27265.  Visitation with the family at the church will precede the service from 10:00 to 10:45am. Officiating the service will be Rev. Michelle Foster-Beckerleg and Rev. David Duncan.

Following the church service, interment will be at Abbott’s Creek Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, 2817 Abbott’s Creek Church Road, High Point, NC 27265.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Covenant Church building fund.
