Commander Joseph Eugene Lyons, Jr., U.S. Navy, retired, died peacefully in his sleep on June 6, 2019 at age 74.
A twenty year Navy veteran, he was commissioned in 1966 as an ROTC graduate of the University of North Carolina and served honorably as a Surface Warfare Officer, retiring in 1986 from his last duty station at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. After his retirement, he earned his Master’s degree in Library Science and served as Director of the Bradley Beach, New Jersey and Sayreville, New Jersey public libraries. He entered full retirement in 2007, moving to High Point.
He is survived by his wife, Constance; daughter, Jennifer and her husband Derek; brother, Patrick; sister, Eileen; and sister, Mary and her husband Paul.
A memorial mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Reverend Peter Leonard, O.S.F.S. officiating. Inurnment will follow at the church columbarium. Visitation will be held 30 minutes prior to the mass at the church. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of the Piedmont, 1801 Westchester Dr. High Point, N.C., 27262.
