Juanita June (Elkins) Newsome

Juanita June Elkins Newsome, 79 of Mint Hill passed away on Monday, May 13, 2019 at White Oak Manor in Charlotte.

Juanita was born in Coal Mountain, West Virginia on October 5, 1939 to the late Wayne Elkins and Rhuie Inez Browning Elkins.  In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Troy Newsome,  a son, David Newsome and brothers, Joe Elkins, Larry Elkins and Doug Elkins.

Juanita was a lover of flowers, scratch off lottery tickets and cleaning windows.  She was an avid watcher of Days of our Lives soap opera which she had watched from the first episode.  In her opinion her pinto beans could not be beat and she preferred them with a little cornbread and onion, and in truth, was likely fueled by her beans and Maxwell House instant coffee.  Her coffee had to be "weakend down" and not too strong.  A collector of dolls which she kept "put up" so that nothing would happen to them.  She passed her days with tending to her flowers which she loved and surrounded herself and her home with a wide variety, but marigolds was by far her favorite.  Her love for puzzles extended beyond the norm, and she was able to piece back together many a broken "what not" with her mixture of evaporated milk as glue.  She also loved to color and passed her time coloring and painting anything she could get her hands on, often turning the mundane into the extraordinary.  In secret she often would compose poems and short stories, mostly about her life and her children which she rarely shared.  Her faith played a large part in who she was and she could frequently be heard singing gospel songs.  A prankster at heart who found enjoyment in the little things, she will be missed, and definitely remembered for the joy she brought into her friends and families lives.

Juanita is survived by her children, Ricky Newsome of Mavisdale, VA, Rocky Newsome of High Point, Teresa Newsome of High Point, Jerry Newsome of High Point, Stephanie Newsome of Charlotte and Michael Newsome of Charlotte; grandchildren, Amity Marie, Krystal, Brooklyn, Robin, Krissy, BJ, Savannah, Ally and Andrea; brothers and sister, Donald Elkins of High Point, Donna Elkins of Trinity, Bert Elkins of High Point, Glen Elkins of High Point, and Arnold Elkins of Marlington, WV.

The family will visit with friends from 10:00 until 10:45 a.m. on Friday, May 17, 2019 at Cumby Family Funeral Service, 1015 Eastchester Drive in High Point followed by a Celebration of Juanita’s life at 11:00 a.m.
