Mr. Posey Lee Cockerham, 94, resident of Jamestown, died March 13, 2019 at Shannon Grey Rehabilitation and Recovery Center.
Mr. Cockerham was born April 30, 1924 in Surry County, a son to the late William M. and Verlie Payne Cockerham. In 1949, he moved to this area where he later retired from the optician’s office of Dr. McClain B. Leath after 26 years of service. He was a member Oak View Baptist Church, the Oak View Lions Club, and in earlier years, was active with the Boy Scouts of America. He also was a U.S. Navy veteran. His wife, the former Margaret Ella Miller, preceded him in death in 2015. In addition to his wife and parents, he was also preceded by a sister, Pauline Stinson; and two brothers, Billy Jack Cockerham and Marty Cockerham.
Surviving is his daughter, Cindy Gunter and husband James of Winston-Salem; two sons, Mitch Cockerham and wife Carol of Winston-Salem and Bill Cockerham of High Point; a sister, Bonnie Sue Riggan of Mocksville; four grandchildren, Olivia, Cameron, Brad and Daniel Cockerham; three great grandchildren, Peyton Harwell, Amani Thomas and Jaden Thomas; four step grandchildren, Melanie Wyant, Drew Hayworth, Brandi Shuler and Chris Gunter; two step-great grandchildren, Emily Wyant and Matthew Wyant; and a step-great grandchild, Huxley, due in May.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of the Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point. Visitation will be 30 minutes prior to the service at the funeral home. A graveside service with military honors will be held later that day at 1:00 p.m. at the National Cemetery in Salisbury.
