Mamie Iris (Tilley) Crotts

Mamie Iris (Tilley) Crotts, 89, journeyed from earth to Heaven on Sunday, November 12, 2017. Mamie was born July 2, 1928 to William Ira and Lacey Daisy (Edwards) Tilley in the family home adjacent to Guilford Battleground Park. Her passion for the outdoors began early, when she roamed and explored the battleground with her siblings. Later her family lived in Pleasant Garden, Liberty, and then Level Cross. She graduated from Randleman High School in 1947 and married Lester Crotts of Level Cross.

She was a precious Christian lady, a devoted and loving wife and mother beloved by her family. Her sacrificial life of always putting others first was an example to all who knew her. Mamie’s love of the outdoors was inspiring. All her life she loved wandering through the woods, looking for wildflowers, plants, and creatures, and identifying trees. An avid gardener, she maintained many flower beds, and with her husband, grew huge vegetable gardens. When in the garden, her sharp eyes were always on the lookout for interesting rocks for her collection.

 She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Lester, as well as siblings William Tilley and Thelma Wilson. She is survived by sons, Ronald (Judy) of Randleman and Willy (Clarice) of Sophia and grandchildren Rebecca Crotts and Elizabeth Vickory, both of San Jose, CA, and Jeff Benge (Jennifer) and great-grandsons Brycen and Hayden Benge of Sophia; and siblings Clifford Tilley of Siler City, Jack Tilley of Randleman, Doris Simmons of Marietta, GA, and sister-in-law Jacqueline Henley (Garland) of Randleman.

A service to celebrate Mamie’s life will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 15, 2017, in the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale. Interment will follow in Randolph Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday night from 6 until 8 at the funeral home.
