Tribute

COLFAX, N.C. – Marie McCoy Winchester, of Colfax, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 2, 2021 after battling the effects of Alzheimer’s disease for many years.  Marie was born November 16, 1932 in Union County, North Carolina, to the late Lonnie James McCoy and Ruby Lee Harkey McCoy.

Marie graduated from Wesley Chapel High School in 1950.  In 1953, she married her handsome high school sweetheart, Harry Louis Winchester.   As Harry pursued his career with Superior Stone and then Martin Marietta Aggregates, Marie took care of their children and their home as they moved to various locations.  They spent the majority of their 64-year marriage in Salisbury, High Point and then eventually retired to a home on High Rock Lake.

Marie was a devoted wife and mother who loved to cook, kept an immaculate house and was highly skilled in sewing everything from clothing to curtains to beautiful quilts.  She enjoyed traveling with family and friends, playing bridge and poker, and taking care of her many animal companions over the years.  Most of all, Marie provided love and laughter to all who knew her.  Her infectious laugh was a joy to hear.

In 2006, Harry and Marie moved to the River Landing Retirement Community in Colfax, N.C. where they lived together until Harry’s death in 2017.  In addition to her parents and her beloved husband, Marie was preceded in death by her brothers James McCoy and Larry Max McCoy.

Marie is survived by her three children; son Michael Lynn Winchester and wife Debbie Vinson Winchester of Monroe, N.C.; daughter Cheryl Winchester Tucker and husband Ronald Wayne Tucker of Lexington, N.C.; and daughter Kara Winchester Price and husband John Mott Price of Concord, N.C.  Also surviving Marie are granddaughters Jorja Marie Smith, Courtney Rose Tucker, Avery Morgan Price and Sara Mackenzie Price and great granddaughters, Annabelle, Willow and EmmaRose.  Marie is survived by her sister Kay McCoy Baker of Monroe, N.C. and brother Bill McCoy of New Salem, N.C. as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service and interment of Marie’s ashes, along with those of her departed husband Harry, will be scheduled at a later date.  Memorials in Marie’s honor may be made to the Humane Society of the Piedmont at www.hspiedmont.org/general-fund or the Alzheimer’s Association of Western Carolina at www.alz.org/northcarolina.
