Martha Winston Adkins, 89, a resident of River Landing, passed away peacefully on January 7, 2018, at Hospice Home of High Point surrounded by her family. She was born February 5, 1928, in Richmond, VA, to the late Henry S. and Dorothy G. Winston. Martha taught 4 year-old kindergarten at Town and Country with Mrs. Voorhees for many years and then continued her own preschool on Brantley Circle. A member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, she served on the Altar Guild and the Flower Committee. Martha was also involved for several years with Mobile Meals, the Junior League of High Point and the Debutante Committee.
Her husband of 57 years, Herbert H. Adkins, preceded her in death in 2005. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Henry S. Winston, Jr. and Thomas G. Winston.
She is survived by her two sons, Herbert ‘Bert’ H. Adkins, Jr. and wife Sara, and Thomas ‘Tommy’ W. Adkins and wife Jeffri; two daughters, Elizabeth ‘Betsy’ A. Smith and husband Jeff, and Martha Gardner Barrier and husband Randy; twelve grandchildren; and fourteen great grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00p.m. on Thursday, January 11, 2018, at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in High Point, with The Rev. Amanda Stephenson officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the Church.
