Mrs. Mary Lou Joyce Atkinson, 82, resident of High Point, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital.
Lou was born on March 16, 1936 in Surry County, a daughter of the late Rufus A. and Ida Moseley Joyce. She graduated from White Plains High School in 1953 and later began her career as a legal secretary. She went on to become a real estate appraiser and retired as an assisted living administrator where she affected many lives with love and care. Lou enjoyed cooking for family and friends, as well as gardening, especially when at her beloved farm in Surry County. She was a very active member of Westchester Baptist Church where she was a choir member and served on several committees.
Surviving is her husband of 65 years, William “Bill” I. Atkinson; daughters, Lisa McKinnon and husband Bobby of Archdale and Beth Edmondson and husband Jack of Rocky Mount; a granddaughter who was the joy of her life, Caroline Edmondson; and many nieces, nephews and special friends. She was preceded in death by her sister, Vivian Smith; and brothers, Frank, Perry and Clyde Joyce. She will be cherished as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday at Westchester Baptist Church with Dr. Eric Peacock officiating. Interment will follow at Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Saturday at the Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point and other times at the residence.
