High Point - Neal William Atkinson, age 86, husband of Helen Marie Atkinson, passed away on June 15, 2022.
Neal, the son of James and Louise Atkinson, grew up in Dedham, Massachusetts, graduated Northeastern University with a degree in electrical engineering, and served as a Captain in the US Army Signal Corps. He and Helen raised their family in Fair Haven, NJ, and Neal worked as a civilian for the US Army at Fort Monmouth, NJ, ultimately becoming a senior executive with the US Defense Department.
Neal believed in giving back and actively participated in his communities, churches, and service organizations, serving on the Board of Directors of the United Way of Central NJ and Habitat for Humanity of Washington, NC. Through the Rotary Club, he managed a program that provided 2400 adults and children in Sri Lanka with artificial legs and rehabilitation services. He also mentored High Point University students as part of a career development program. As a member of Presbyterian churches where he lived, he served as a Deacon and Elder.
Neal is survived by his wife, Helen; his children, Brian and Lynn Atkinson; his grandchildren, Robert Atkinson, Kevin Atkinson, Justin Atkinson, Riley Dickman, and Charlotte Dickman; and five nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents and his brothers, Robert Atkinson of Needham, Massachusetts, and Dick Atkinson of Nashua, NH.
A memorial service will be held at River Landing at Sandy Ridge on Thursday, June 30th, at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to St Jude’s Children’s Hospital at https://www.stjude.org/ or to the First Presbyterian Church of High Point at http://www.firstpreshp.org/.
