Tribute

Phillip Joseph Hinshaw, 82, of High Point passed away on May 11, 2019 at Pennybyrn. Born on September 1, 1936 to John and Martha Safrit Hinshaw, he was a lifelong resident of High Point and a graduate of High Point High School. Known as a hard-working salesman, Phil along with his wife, Shelby, owned and operated Whippoorwill Wholesale for 49 years, building a network of loyal customers and friends across the central Piedmont and Sandhills region. An avid deer hunter and outdoorsman, he loved time in the woods especially at his beloved farm in Ellerbe, NC. His annual Post-Thanksgiving Pork Chop Supper was a legendary tradition that drew hundreds. He was a proud member of the Price and Richardson Hunt Club as well as the Sandhills Rod and Gun Club.  He was a Fourth-Degree member of the Knights of Columbus at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church where he faithfully ran their monthly Bingo fundraiser for many years. His generous, easy-going spirit, sly sense of humor, and love of family and friends will be greatly missed.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mary Martha Hinshaw. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Shelby Mosley Hinshaw, and his daughters, Angela Bryant (Tim) of Asheville and Tiffany Brennan (Mike) of Tampa, Florida. He was PawPaw to his eight surviving grandchildren: Benjamin Bryant (Jenny), Daniel Bryant, Graham Bryant (Morgan), and Caroline Pressley (Tyler) all of Asheville and Sarah Brennan (fiancé, Greg Chapman), Olivia Brennan, Amanda Brennan, and Rebecca Brennan all of Tampa, Florida. He also leaves behind two great-grandchildren, Sadie and Avery Bryant of Asheville. His surviving siblings are brothers, John Hinshaw, Jr. of Texas, Michael Hinshaw of Topsail Beach, Matthew Hinshaw (Debi) of High Point, and Andrew Hinshaw (Bekki) of Greensboro, and sister, Regina Howard (Jack) of Texas as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
