Roma (Williams) Foister Amos

December 5, 1926 ~ April 5, 2020 (age 93) 93 Years Old

Tribute

High Point - Roma Williams Foister Amos, 93 passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 5, 2020.

Born on December 5, 1926 in High Point, Mrs. Amos was a birthright Quaker, the daughter of Robert McClain and Mary Stafford Williams.  She attended Jamestown and High Point city schools, and in 1947 graduated from Furman University in Greenville, S.C. with a BA in English.

She attended Deep River Friends Meeting until 1948 when she wed Thomas Welch Foister, and became a member of First United Methodist Church.  There, at various times she served as President of the United Methodist Women, was a member of the wedding committee, and taught 2nd grade Sunday School. Her community involvement included a charter membership in the S.C. Women’s Auxiliary, the High Point Study Club, the Junior League of High Point, of which she was a past president, as well as the High Point Community Concert Association.

In addition to her community work, her most important role was that of wife and mother.  She and Mr. Foister had three children:  Robert Thomas Foister of Asheville, N.C., Emily Foister Miller of High Point, and Douglas Stuart Foister (Suzanne) of McKinney, TX.

After her husband’s death in 1972, she worked variously as the Community Relations Director for the Children’s Home Society of N.C., as President of the High Point Chapter of the American Cancer Society, and as a licensed realtor for Wright Realty in High Point.

In 1990 she married Wray McMichael Amos of High Point, and joined Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, where she served on the Wedding and the Bereavement Committees.  During the years before her second husband’s death in 2002, she and Mr. Amos enjoyed traveling to England, Ireland, Scotland, and continental Europe, Israel, and also trips to Western Canada, Alaska and various places in the Continental United States.  She also clearly cherished her time with stepchildren Leslie Helms (Ken), Julie Amos Brannon, and Wray McMichael Amos, Jr. (Madeline), their families and the growing number of grandchildren and great grandchildren from both her original family, and those of her family by her second marriage.

In 2014, she moved to the Westchester Harbour assisted living facility at Providence Place in High Point, where she was ably and lovingly cared for by staff and administration alike for almost six years until her death.  In her last years, during a time of declining health, she enjoyed visiting with many friends and members of her family, and on numerous occasions would reflect happily on the blessings of having not just one, but two devoted husbands and families.  Truly, it was her greatest joy.

Surviving, in addition to her children and step-children, are her sister Bobbie Anne Cannon (Jim) of New Braunfels,TX, grandchildren Peter Foister (Beth) of Knoxville, TN, Julie Carter of Conway, S.C., Sally Thrift of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Ellen Ervin of Lexington, N.C., Laura Foister of Waco, TX, Stuart, Michael , and Natalie Foister of McKinney, Tx; and great grandchildren Avery and Graham Carter of Conway, S.C., Prestin and Taylor Smith of High Point, Colt Clark of Waco, TX, and Maley Thrift of Myrtle Beach, S.C.  Other survivors include step grandchildren Whit Brannon (Julie) of Durham, Mandy B. Hemsworth (Will) of Raleigh, Ellen Amos of Greenville, S.C., Wray M. Amos III of Raleigh, and J.B. Amos of High Point.

She was preceded in death by brother-in-law James Cannon of New Braunfels, TX, daughter-in-law Nancy G. Foister (Robert) and grandson J. Patrick Foister, both of Rochester Hills, MI.

The family requests that memorials be directed to Providence Place, or to Hospice of the Piedmont.  Her Hospice Team provided invaluable support for the family, as well as the highly skilled, dedicated and compassionate care that eased her last days.
