Strupe Lackey

March 25, 1931 ~ October 6, 2017 (age 86) 86 Years Old

Mr. Warren Strupe Lackey passed away after a brief illness on Friday, October 6, 2017 at Pennybyrn at Maryfield.

Strupe was born March 25, 1931 in Winston-Salem, NC, a son to the late Leslie Warren and Grace Strupe Lackey.  He was a graduate of Guilford College after spending four years in the U.S. Coast Guard between his junior and senior years.  He and the late congressman Howard Coble were Guilford buddies and served in the Coast Guard together.

Strupe worked as an independent sales representative in the furniture industry for over 40 years, successfully representing various furniture and accessory manufacturers.  The highlight of his career was working as independent sales manager for Sedgefield Lamps, the lamp division of Adams Woodturning, which he was instrumental in starting and growing.  There, he collaborated in merchandising and promoting several highly successful lamp collections in the industry.  Strupe was an initial incorporator of American Bank & Trust in High Point which was ultimately merged into BB&T.  He had many years of devoted service to the local BB&T bank board.

Proud of his Guilford College roots, he served as a member of the Guilford College Alumni Board, President’s Club, and Quaker Club.  He treasured the comradery and fellowship of his membership in the Virginia Carolinas Home Furnishings Representative Association and his work with the International Home Furnishings Manufacturers Association to advise and consult on making the furniture market better for the exhibitors and buyers.

He was an active and devoted member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, joining in membership in 1958 at the Main Street location.  The church was founded by his great-great-great uncle Peter Doub, a Wesley circuit preacher, in 1857.  Strupe served his church in many capacities, one of which was lay leader from 2005-2008.

Strupe is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty Martin Lackey; a son, Warren Lackey (Joni); a daughter, Susan Sullivan (Mark); a brother, Leslie William (Bill) Lackey; five grandchildren, Ren Lackey (Katie), Ross Lackey (Tiffany), Grace Lackey, Katherine Wood (Paul) and John Sullivan; and four great granddaughters, Peyton Lee Lackey, Morgan Elizabeth Lackey, Allie Kay Wood and Florence Elizabeth Lackey.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday in the sanctuary of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church with Dr. Jeff Patterson officiating.  Visitation will follow the service in the Asbury Room at the church.  Memorials may be directed to the Rail and Sarah Brinson Contemporary Worship Fund at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, 1225 Chestnut Dr. High Point, NC, 27262 or to the Maryfield Resident Care Fund at Pennybyrn at Maryfield, 109 Penny Rd.
