Dr. Terry Grey Mitchell, 75, resident of High Point, died October 7, 2023, at Westwood Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Terry was born February 28, 1948, in High Point, a son to the late Wade and Helen Horne Mitchell, and remained in this area all his life. He attended Appalachian State University where he received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees, and then UNCG, earning another Master’s degree, an Education Specialist degree and receiving his PhD in Education. Terry had a life-long love for public education and worked many years in the Alamance Burlington School System as a teacher at Southern Middle School. He was an active member in many associations over the years, including, the North Carolina Association of Educators, the National Education Association, and the North Carolina Retired School Personal, and, served as president of both the North Carolina Retired School Personnel and Alamance/Burlington Retired School Personal Association. Terry was also involved with the democratic party, serving as president of Guilford County Senior Democratics and treasurer of the North Carolina Senior Democrats. He also was an elected delegate to the yearly NEA convention and a member of Phi Delta Kappa Fraternity.
On August 23, 1970, he married the former Karen Cox who survives of the residence. Also surviving is his daughter, Heather Shepherd and husband Jason of Apex; and his grandchildren, Kate and Nathan Shepherd also of Apex.
A private graveside service will be held at Floral Garden Park Cemetery in High Point. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Hospice of Randolph, 416 Vision Dr. Asheboro, NC 27203 or to Hospice of Davidson County, 200 Hospice Way, Lexington, NC 27292. Special thanks is extended to the doctors, nurses and staff at Westwood Health and Rehabilitation Center for the loving care given to him during his time there.
