Thomas Edward "Ed" Smothers

December 6, 1936 ~ December 12, 2018 (age 82) 82 Years Old

Tribute

Thomas Edward Smothers, died on December 12 at High Point Medical Center. A long-time resident of High Point, NC, Ed was born in Rockingham County on December 6, 1936. He was the only child of Fred Eston Smothers and Lettie Ellington Smothers.

Ed graduated from High Point High School in 1954 and UNC-CH. He was a member of the Rams Club until his death. After graduation he served in the North Carolina National Guard. He began a career in furniture sales with Globe Furniture in 1960 and retired from Thomasville Furniture Industries in 2001 after more than 30 years as a sales representative.

He served on the vestry of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church and was a member of Emerywood Country Club where he served on the Board and was president in 1976. He coached little league football and baseball and was the proud recipient of the Golden Whistle award from the YMCA when his older son was nine years old (recognition for the most vocal spectator coach).

Before and after retirement he enjoyed many golf rounds with his buddies at Willow Creek. Special times he treasured were golf trips to Ireland and Scotland with his sons and friends, beach trips with his family and the Wednesday morning Bible study led by John Willett. Though he made multiple holes-in-one he did have one great disappointment – he didn’t win the Powerball Lottery (and his family shares that disappointment).

He is survived by his wife, Becky of the home and sons Rick (Joanna) of Wrightsville Beach, Tom (Debbie) of High Point and a daughter, Beth (Shawn) of Bennettsville, SC and five grandchildren: Erin, Jes, Sara, Becca and Ashley.

The family wants to recognize the excellent care and attention by Dr. John Weaver, Dr. Ike Nwobu, Dr. Shah and nurses Brooke, Rhonda, Liz and Andrea and the staff at High Point Medical Center and thank Sister Lucy and staff of Pennybyrn at Maryfield.

A private family inurnment is planned and a celebration of life will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers the family request that memorials be given to the YMCA Men’s Bible Study, PO Box 5351, High Point, NC 27262, High Point Regional Foundation, 601 N. Elm Street, High Point, NC  27262 or Penny Byrn at Maryfield, 109 Penny Road, High Point, NC  27260
