Mr. A. Darrell Harris

A. Darrell Harris, Founder and CEO of Furnitureland South, died Friday August 8, 2014, at his home in Greensboro. By his side were his wife Stella S. Harris, and sons Jeffrey Harris and Jason Harris.  He was 71.  He was preceded in death aby his parents Calivn Foster Harris and Venus Wester Harris and a brother Carey Foster Harris.

Mr. Harris was born in High Point in 1943. He earned a degree in Business at Gardner-Webb College.  He married the love of his life, Stella Sutton, in 1964.  He served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam conflict.  

In 1969 he and Mrs. Harris founded Furnitureland South, now the world’s largest furniture store, in Jamestown, NC.

In 2010 A. Darrell Harris was inducted into the American Furniture Hall of Fame.  His company has been one of the top 50 furniture retailers for over 25 years.

Mr. Harris highly valued his personal relationships with business associates and employees.  He found many ways to combine friendship with his favorite hobbies: golf, fishing, and softball.

His greatest passion and joy in life was his family.  He played an active role as father and grandfather.  

Mr. Harris’s Christian faith was central to his purpose in life.  He was a lifetime member of Green Street Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife Stella Harris; Jeffrey and Stacey Harris, their children, Sydney, Tanner and Kendall; Jason and Jennifer Harris, their children Caroline, Lindsay, Sarah Parker, Jace, and Sophie; his brother Dennis Harris; and his sister Judy Johnson.  

Funeral services for Mr. Harris will be held 3 pm Monday at Green Street Baptist Church with the Reverend Richard Hardee, the Reverend Brandon Ware and the Reverend Dr. Robert Steele officiating.  Entombment will follow in the mausoleum at Floral Garden Memorial Park Cemetery.  The family will greet friends at the church Monday from 1:00 until 2:30 pm.      
In lieu of flowers the famiy requests that memorials be given to the Baptist Children's Home,PO Box 338, Thomasville, NC or to the Salvation Army, 301 W. Green Street, High Point, NC  27260
