Mr. Bruce Richard Banther, Sr., age 77, died Friday September 7th at Hospice Home at High Point. Bruce and his family were so appreciative of all help he received during the five months he was ill. They extend a special thanks to Dr. Susan K. Williford and her staff, to everyone at the High Point Regional Cancer Center and to Hospice of the Piedmont.
Bruce was born May 24th, 1935 in Hamilton County, Tennessee, a son of the late Jack and Jessie Knox Banther and had been a resident of the High Point area since in 1968. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering from the University of Tennessee Chattanooga and was a US Army veteran, serving in the 82nd Airborne. His interest in Genealogy led Bruce, along with his wife Maxine, to publish a book on the Banther family. From 1968 to 1975 Bruce was plant manager and engineer at Marsh Furniture Company and later became C.E.O. of Eastchester Computer Systems. Following retirement from Eastchester Computer Systems, Bruce enjoyed working as a family counselor at Floral Garden Memorial Park. He was a past member of Certified Manufacturing Engineers Club and the Computer & Automated Systems Association. He was also a member of the Guilford County Genealogical Society.
Bruce was also very civic minded having been a past member of Toastmasters International, the Elks Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow with the Rotary Club of the Triad, where he was his club’s “Rotarian of the Year’ in 1990.
In addition to his parents, Bruce was also preceded in death by six brothers and a grandson Zachary Byerly. On September 2nd, 1956 he married the former Maxine Godwin who survives of the home.
Also surviving are his daughter, Rhonda Lynn Byerly and her husband Tom; three sons, Bruce Banther, Jr., Randy Banther and his wife Lyn and Rodney Max Banther; one sister, Esther B. Hayes of Chattanooga, Tennessee. Two brothers, Buck Banther of Chattanooga, Tennessee and Jackie Banther and his wife Shirley of Bryant, Alabama; nine grandchildren, Christopher, Courtney and their mother Lori Banther, Ryan, Lauren, Will and their mother leslie Banther, Korey and Kensley Banther and Rebecca Byerly and his mother-in-law, Estelle Godwin of Dunn.          
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Tuesday, September 11th in the Chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service with Pastor Brian Donley and Reverend Eric Peacock officiating. Burial will follow in Floral Garden Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends, at the funeral home, from 1:00 pm until the service time at 2:00 pm.
Pallbearers will be, Chris Banther, Ryan Banther, Will Banther, Marc Phillips, Andrew Phillips and Alton Cobb.
