Mr. Fred Norman Joyce

Fred Norman Joyce of Pennybyrn at Maryfield, died on Thursday, February 28th.  He was born on the 21st day of January, 1928, near Madison, N.C., son of Hiram W. Joyce and Nannie Gann Joyce.

After graduating from high school he received an Accounting Degree from Kings Business College in Greensboro and became a Civil Service employee working at the Overseas Replacement Depot in Greensboro. He entered Wake Forest College in the fall of 1945.  His College attendance was interrupted by his volunteering for service in the U..S .Army in July of 1946.   He served for approximately fifteen months, as a clerk in the Battalion Headquarters of the 24th division of the Army of Occupation in Japan at Camp Hakata, near Fukuoka.  He returned to Wake Forest College beginning in January 1948, majoring in Business Administration and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in June of 1950.  He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in his senior year and was a charter member of the Omicron Delta chapter of Theta Chi Fraternity.

After graduation he moved to High Point and was with Curtis Smithdeal, Inc. Realtors until June of 1985 at which time he sold his interest in the firm and began work with for the firm of Chambers & Price Realtors, working there until he retired in July of 1995, after serving 45 years in the Real Estate profession in High Point.

He was a graduate of the Realtors Institute at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  He served as President of the High Point Board of Realtors in 1964 and was awarded a Lifetime membership in the Board after his retirement. He compiled and wrote the history of the High Point Board of Realtors, and in 2001 he was elected to the High Point Regional Association of Realtors “Hall of Fame”.  

He was a member of the High Point Rotary Club since 1954, serving on various committees and was a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow.   He was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, serving on the various committees including the Associate Board and Senior Board of the Church.  He and his wife were long time members of the Chancel Choir.

After retirement he volunteered with the Communities in School program. He also was a volunteer fund raiser for the Junior League of High Point for the preservation of the Briles House.

He married Mary Elizabeth (Mary Lib) Clark on December 15th, 1951,who proceeded him in death in June of 2012.  He is also survived by two sons, David Clark Joyce and his wife Barbara, and James Stuart Joyce and his wife Deanna, who reside in High Point, as well as two grandchildren, Robert James Joyce of Greensboro, and Kyrie Elizabeth Joyce of New York City.

A Memorial service will be held 11 AM. Saturday at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church with the Reverend Dr. J. Alexander Ward and the  Reverend Steven Joyce,  officiating. A private  committal service will be held in the family plot at Oakwood Municipal Cemetery.   The family will receive friends  in the Asbury Room one  hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Junior League of High Point, 1103 N. Main St., High Point, NC 27262 for the renovation of the Briles House or to the High Point Regional Association of Realtors HPRAR Foundation Fund, 1830 Eastchester Drive, High Point, NC 27265.
