                 Dr. Harold Thomas Jarrell, 90, died Tuesday, June 3, 2014, at River Landing, after a period of declining health.  Dr. Jarrell was a resident of High Point until 2008 when he moved to River Landing in Colfax.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 5, 2014 at Cumby Family Funeral Service, located at 1015 Eastchester Drive in High Point from 7 to 9 p.m.  The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 6, 2014, at High Point Friends Meeting, 800 Quaker Lane, High Point.  The Rev. Kelly Kellum and the Rev. Billy Britt will conduct the service.  Burial will be at Springfield Friends Meeting cemetery immediately following the service.
Dr. Jarrell was born December 27, 1923 in High Point to Esther Kirkman Jarrell and Thomas Marvin Jarrell.  He was a lifelong member of High Point Friends Meeting, and active in the many aspects of church life, including Trustee and Clerk of the meeting, Past President of the Brotherhood Sunday School Class and an initial supporter of High Point Friends School.  Dr. Jarrell was a graduate of High Point High School, Guilford College and Pennsylvania State College of Optometry.  His college education was interrupted by his military service in World War II.  He served his country in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and was stationed in France.  He practiced optometry with his twin brother, Howard, in High Point as Drs. Jarrell and Jarrell.  Dr. Jarrell practiced from 1954 until 2005.  After retirement, when was out in the community he so enjoyed seeing his patients and reminiscing with them about their families.  Dr. Jarrell was a member of the American Optometric Association and the North Carolina Optometric Society.  After retiring from the practice of optometry, he enjoyed a second career in real estate investment and management.  Dr. Jarrell was active in his real estate companies up until his death with the able assistance of his employees, Darla Barber, Jill Keiser, and James Lloyd.
Dr. Jarrell was a former member of the High Point Jaycees and Past President of the High Point Lions Club.  He was a former Assistant Scout Master to Troop #7 of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church and a former member of the Uwharrie Council Executive Board of the Boy Scouts of America.  
Dr. Jarrell was a member of the U.S. Power Squadron, Winston-Salem Unit.  He was an experienced lifelong boater and spent many happy hours on the water, teaching countless children to waterski, fishing with his grandsons and captaining his boats on High Rock Lake, the Intercostal Waterway and Beufort, NC.  There was no one of whom he was more proud than his four grandsons.  His hobbies were those in which his children and grandchildren were interested.  He could often be found outside working with his tools, fixing or washing cars and repairing any and everything that was broken.
Dr. Jarrell is survived by his loving wife of almost 58 years, Mary Riddick Long Jarrell of the home; a daughter, Jennie Whitford Jarrell Hayman and her husband, Wilson Hayman; a son, the Honorable Harold Thomas Jarrell, Jr. and his wife, Cynthia Roberson Jarrell; four grandsons, Wilson Whitford Hayman, Harold Thomas Jarrell, III, Robert Kirkman Jarrell, and David Parker Jarrell; brothers-in-law and their wives, the Rev. Dr. and Mrs. William Fife Long, the Rev. Dr. and Mrs. David Allison Long, III; four nieces, two nephews and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.  He is predeceased by his sisters and brothers, Annie Lee Jarrell, William Marvin Jarrell, Ruth Jarrell Hoover, Harriss Hassell Jarrell, Charles Richardson Jarrell, Joseph Parker Jarrell and his twin Dr. Howard Carl Jarrell.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Winged Foot at River Landing for their loving and attentive care of Dr. Jarrell in the months leading up to his passing.  The family would also like to thank James Lloyd for his service and devotion to Dr. Jarrell.
