Welcome to the memorial page for

Mr. Ned Worth Mizelle

December 12, 1931 ~ November 4, 2011 (age 79) 79 Years Old
Ned Worth Mizelle Sr., 79, of High Point NC, died November 4, 2011, from complications due to a long battle with Parkinson’s, MSA and Alzheimer’s. Ned is survived by his loving wife, of forty one years, Brenda Skeen Mizelle; 6 children; Ned Worth Mizelle Jr. and his wife Heather of Beaufort, SC, Scott Mizelle and his wife Melissa of Danbury, Tina Fox of Danbury, Matthew Mizelle and his wife Tracy of Racine, WI, Lynn Walser of Archdale, George Mizelle and wife Sheila of Raleigh; seventeen grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Ned was born in Windsor, NC to the late George David Mizelle and Elizabeth Cowan Mizelle.  Throughout his life Ned always had a special interest and passion for design and fabrication.  Ned attended North Carolina State University where he studied Aeronautical Engineering and architectural design.  Ned started his career with Western Electric as a project engineer, however; his passion for design led him to a career in furniture design.  In the mid 1970’s he moved to Georgetown, KY where he was head of product engineering for Hoover Ball and Bearing.  There he designed and fabricated various mechanisms that would be used and reproduced by numerous furniture manufactures. His career included designing furniture mechanisms for such companies as Leggett & Platt, Inc., Sealy, Inc., Voyager Products, and others.
Ned’s passion for design and innovation allowed him to produce hundreds of utility patents for many household furniture items that have been used and are still being used in the furniture industry, notably the design mechanisms used in the modern day sleeper sofa and the recliner.
In addition to Ned’s love for design, in his spare time he enjoyed fishing and boating.  Prior to Ned’s decline in health, he was an avid sailor and enjoyed spending time on his sailboat, “Boy Toy” with his sons and daughter.  In his earlier days he enjoyed spending time dancing, especially shagging with his bride, Brenda.
Ned was a wonderful, devoted husband, father and friend to those he loved.  A special thanks goes out to all of the staff who loved and cared for Ned at the GrayBrier Nursing & Retirement Center during his stay.
A memorial service to celebrate Ned’s life will be at 4:00 pm Sunday in the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point with the Reverend Doctor Robert U. Ferguson, Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home following the service until 6:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers and to honor Ned, the family requests memorials be directed to Hospice of the Piedmont, 1801 Westchester Drive, High Point, NC 27262.
