“for each tree is known by its own fruit …The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good…”(Lk 6:44-46).

How shocked we all were at Friendly Avenue Karen Church in Greensboro to hear of the passing of Dr. John—“Thara John” as he was known to the Karen community of Guilford and Forsyth counties and throughout NC. Many expressed how they had been touched by Thara John’s life and by his many acts of kind service to them—service that displayed the love, the grace and kindness of the gospel and of the Lord Jesus he loved and treasured. He will be dearly missed. Yet his legacy will continue in the lives of the many hundreds, If not thousands, of Karen, Karenni and other refugee new immigrants from Myanmar he served so well. To Dr. John’s wife and family, thank for sharing him with us all. We will be praying for continuing grace and comfort.

C. Bryan Presson -Pastor, Friendly Avenue Karen Church

"Dr. John, I knew you when I visited Chin-Myanmar Christian Fellowship in 2010. You encouraged me in every step that I am involving in Ministerial Education and Clergy Development for Burmese people in the United States. I will miss you, John."

Dr. McMurphy was a wonderful professor. I had him for ACA-118 College Study Skills class in 2013. He would tell us what skills we would need throughout college and in life. I still have the textbook that he would use for the class. After the class was over for the semester, I would come by his office to talk to him and to get advice about everything. I saw him at Wal-Mart once and we spoke for a while. I will miss him dearly and I will be praying for the family.

I was heartboken to read just now of John's death! I am stunned. I cherish my memories of working with him through the MId-Atlantic Christian Education Association and of the lovely dinner the committee shared in his home. May God hold his family closely during these days. You have my prayers and he will be missed!

John, thank you for all that you meant to us at First Wesleyan. We love you for the example of Christ's love that you shared with our care group, and all of the unselfish time you gave to the Burmese. It was such a blessing to have you in our lives. We will always remember your laughter. This picture, in your obituary, is how we will remember you...always smiling and full of purpose and joy for your Lord Jesus. We will miss you so.

Dr. John McMurphy was a kind, caring, gentle spirit and it saddens me that he's gone. I've had him for 2 years he was a brilliant professor he loved everything he did. I remember he would always tell us about his community work that he has done, even though he is gone he is still with us in spirt. He will never be forgotten, he had such a huge impact on the community. My condolences go out to his family and loved ones.

Dr. McMurphy was an amazing professional who showed his faith through his teaching and his concern for his students. It was a privilege to work with Dr. McMurphy and I will truly miss him and what he provided to the students of Liberty University. May the Lord be with you during this difficult time. Blessings for peace-
