Shirley Ann Glover Irvin

March 30, 1936 ~ May 20, 2017 (age 81) 81 Years Old

Shirley Ann Glover Irvin, 81, passed away on May 20, 2017.  Born March 30, 1936, she was the devoted daughter of James Harold Glover and Lola Johnston Glover.

Shirley was a lifelong resident of Jamestown, North Carolina.  She attended Jamestown School and was always proud of the fact she graduated from high school two years early after skipping two grades.  She had perfect attendance throughout her school career.  During her school years she played softball and basketball, once scoring 32 points in a high school basketball game.  She continued to play club softball for several years after graduation.  Shirley obtained an associate degree from the Engineering department of what was then Guilford Technical Institute.  She was the first woman to obtain a degree in that field from GTI.  She worked in the construction industry in many capacities until her health declined. Shirley was an avid sports fan, following several sports and favorite teams throughout the year. Shirley was a lifelong member of English Road Baptist Church. Her parents were founding members and she carried on their commitment to the church throughout her life.  In addition to supporting many church outreach programs she was a member of the choir, filling in as interim choir director when needed.  She was a children’s Sunday school teacher for over 60 years.  Shirley loved music.  She played the saxophone and the piano and often played at local retirement centers.

As a parent to her three children, she was very involved with all of their school and sporting activities.  She filled many roles including activity school bus driver, PTA President, classroom volunteer and Girl Scout leader.  She never missed her children’s school programs or sporting events.  Shirley was blessed with four granddaughters and was always excited to participate in their activities ranging from dance recitals and sporting events to Saturday night skating. Shirley lived to help anyone in need. She always had a positive attitude and never spoke unkindly about others.  She was a tireless worker no matter the task.

Shirley is survived by her children, Bobby Irvin and wife Debbie, Jane Clark and husband Bill, Tommy Irvin; one brother, Bob Ray Glover and wife Karen; four granddaughters, Sarah Irvin Wood and her husband Surry, Hannah Irvin, Shelby Clark, Amelia Irvin; and one great-granddaughter, Margaret Wood.
