Mr. William (Bill) Hough Colonna Jr., 83, resident of High Point, died February 6, 2018 at Westchester Manor.

Bill was born April 5, 1934 in Hampton, VA, a son to the late William Colonna Sr. and Laura D. Colonna.  He graduated from the University of Richmond in 1956 and later attended UNC Chapel Hill where he received his master’s degree in City and Regional Planning.  In 1958 he became the Assistant Planning Director in High Point and four years later, became Director of Planning.  He also was the Assistant Planning Director for the City of Thomasville and, after retirement, was a consultant to the Thomasville Historic Preservation Commission.  In addition, he also worked with the Piedmont Triad Council of Governments and Benchmark Consulting Firm in Kannapolis.

Bill worked with the YMCA in High Point to establish the soccer program for the city.  It started with four teams and the league grew to include 800 men and women, becoming the basis for present day soccer in High Point.

Surviving is his wife, the former Patricia “Pat” Doggett of High Point; a daughter, Catherine Lynn Colonna of High Point; a son, David William Colonna of Miami, FL; five grandchildren, Nikki, Michael, Ava, Samantha and Max; a special niece, Sherri Tarode and husband Chuck of Richlands, VA; a nephew, Cliff Doggett and wife Katie of Richmond, VA; a niece Gigi Doggett of Gloucester, VA; sister-in-law, Alice Doggett of Gloucester, VA; and two special family members, Oliver Weiss and wife Peggy of Fairfax, VA and Devair Vickery of Burlington.  He was preceded in death by a daughter, Laura Beth.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday in the fellowship hall at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church with Dr. Jeff Patterson and Rev. Jared Stine officiating.  Visitation will follow the service in the Dining Room at the church.  Memorials may be directed to the church at 1225 Chestnut Dr. High Point, NC, 27262 or to Open Door Ministries, 400 N. Centennial St. High Point, NC, 27262.  Special thanks is extended to the wonderful staff at Westchester Manor who cared for him the last 8 years, and also to Paul Elliott and Diana Engel, his caregivers.
