James Melvin Howard

James Melvin Howard, Jr., 87, passed away November 14, 2017.  He was born March 24, 1930, in Guilford County, NC, to the late Mae Cagle and James M. Howard, Sr.  James was a foreman with Tomlinson’s of High Point and later worked for Prudential Insurance Company.  A pastor for eleven years and member of First Wesleyan Church, he spoke and sung at many nursing homes and was on his Church visitation team.  James was a member of the NC Horseshoe Hall of Fame and was a state and southeastern horseshoe champion.

He was first married to Fayedean Gardner, who preceded him in death.  Survivors include his wife, Lucy Smith Howard of the home; two sons, Randy Howard and wife Carolyn of Archdale, and Scott Howard and wife Phyllis of Hickory; one daughter, Dreama Stone and husband Ronald of Archdale; one stepson, Joe Proctor of High Point; two stepdaughters, Brenda Lemmond and husband Mike of Stokesdale, and Donna Crawford and husband Mike of Charlotte; one brother, Don Howard and wife Barbara Jo of Newport News, VA; one sister, Ann Redman and husband Phillip of Newport News, VA; five grandchildren; six step grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and four step great grandchildren.  His sister, Dot Osborne, also preceded him in death.

The family will receive friends on Friday, November 17, 2017, beginning at 12:30 pm until the funeral service at 2:00 pm at First Wesleyan Church in High Point.  Rev. Chris Thore and Rev. Roland Cavanaugh will officiate.  Interment will follow at Guilford Memorial Park.
